True Wellbeing is Integrated Wellbeing

For years now personal development guru’s like Tony Robbins have been telling us that our happiness and sense of fulfilment are all about making changes to our mindset. James Clear the author of ‘Atomic Habits” says in order to be well and feel good it is all about the healthy, positive habits you implement. They are both right. What they fail to do is take into account the role our biochemistry plays in how we think and feel.

I launched Human 2.0 at the beginning of 2020. For almost 15 years I had spent time focused on fine tuning people’s biochemistry to get them feeling the best they could. What would happen inadvertently is that not just their physical wellbeing improved but their mental wellbeing also got better. What I observed time and time again was that sometimes people’s wellbeing struggles went beyond their biochemistry. It was their mindset and their inability to change negative patterns of behaviour that meant they were unable to think and feel better.

This got me thinking. Humans are complex creatures and it would be simplistic to assume that just by focusing on biochemistry or mental frameworks or just habits for behaviour change that we will see transformational change for all. Genetic predisposition and biochemistry play as big and just as important a role in wellbeing. In fact in those people that struggle long term with mental wellbeing you can’t help but wonder if they have addressed all aspects of self to get a positive outcome? In order to truly be well its imperative that we go for integrated wellbeing. This means balancing our biology as much as we can, putting in place supportive mental frameworks and implementing healthy habits for positive behaviour change.

As you can see when you look at this model it is concentric and a unity model and continues to feed back into biology, mindset, habits to maintain integrated wellbeing. There is never an end point. All humans are in a constant state of change and wellbeing requires maintenance and at times more therapeutic attention.
